No . 136 The Trusty Servant
The school concert on the eve of Wykeham Day contained performances by Symphony Orchestra ( Tchaikovsky ’ s Romeo and Juliet overture ), Chamber Orchestra , Sinfonia , Chapel Choir , and the Jazz Orchestra , who played a brilliant set of Charles Mingis songs . The Symphony Orchestra and Chapel Choir joined forces in a performance of C . H . H . Parry ’ s ‘ I was glad ’ in honour of the coronation . Wykeham Day itself contained the usual packed schedule of musical performances by vocal and chamber groups , jazz ensembles , and rock bands . The performance by Cantores in War Cloister continues to be a highlight of the day .
So far this term , we have had more chamber concerts , the Chapel Choir has sung for the installation of the new Headmaster ( see photograph below ) and performed Duruflé ’ s magical Requiem for the feast of All Souls , the King ’ s Men have given a concert and workshops with pupils in advance of House Singing , and we had a fabulous reunion for Cantores Episcopi for its 50th anniversary with a concert in New Hall ( see photo and brief account below ).

The Beloites kicked off the Cloister Time drama programme for us this year with their engaging performance of a farcical murder mystery , Over My Dead Body ( sourced from my favourite playscript site , lazybeescripts . com !). The production was expertly directed by Anders Hei and George Hewett . Well done to them , and of course to the cast , who entertained us with their larger-than-life performances and eclectic array of accents . Thanks also to Laurence Guymer ( Ho Do , K ; Co Ro , 10- ) for unleashing his own dramatic talents for the greater good of the house .
Nikhil Krishnan ( Co Ro , 22- ) - under the banner of SROGUS - organised and led a very successful rehearsed reading of Shakespeare ’ s Henry V in the second half of term . The year ended with Moliere ’ s Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme . This show was a triumph : hours were spent perfecting the set , costumes , wigs , clogs , dancing , and of course the French accents . Congratulations to the cast , many of whom are not native speakers , for mastering so many lines of 17 th - century dialogue , and to M . Fondain and Mme . Lombardo for constructing such a colourful and dynamic show , replete with surtitles for those who have forgotten the French of their schooldays .
The Furleyites started this year ’ s season with an entertaining ( 40-minute ) Peter Pan , replete with improvisation , spoof and parody , placing it firmly in the category of that oh-so-popular piece , The Play That Goes Wrong . Perhaps audiences will enjoy more of this at next week ’ s Hopper ’ s pantomime , A Fairytale Adventure , which rounds off the Half in traditional fashion .
Sport : Mark Burley ( Co Ro 20- ) writes :
The weather has been a key player in Short Half recently , with many of our pitches , and those of our rivals , summarily underwater . There has been time , nevertheless , for both Soccer XI and the Jun Colts to progress to their sections of the ISFA Cup , and for the golf team , taking the higher ground , to get through to the Regional semi-final of the ISGA competition .
Enjoying their own brand of moisture , Boat Club have had a number of successes at the Avon Regatta . There were wins for the J14 Quad , J16 Four , Girls Quad and Senior Eight , as well as a strong J15 performance . The Senior Eight won both the Open Eight and J18 Eight category , winning the ‘ Jamaica Cup ’ in the process . It was a brilliant day overall , we are told , with excellent performances across the board and a great atmosphere , helped by the great parental support , who provided strong encouragement and fantastic nutritional replenishment .
House sport continues to be keenly fought , with Flower , Foster and Chawker Pots yet to be decided . The Editor would also like to add that , at a rather different level , her team , the 6 th XI ( Homeric epithet , ‘ mighty ’) is , at the time of writing , unbeaten , having played Bradfield , Lancing and Eton . Watch this space for the possibility of a 25 th anniversary celebration in two years ’ time …
Cantores Episcopi 50th Anniversary A Physics don , four Furleyites , and a Latin moniker is an unlikely starting point , but 50 years later , Cantores Episcopi is very much a WinColl tradition . It is also a cherished musical memory for generations of singers who have been introduced to the delights of harmony singing in its ranks . For some , it has been one of the significant stepping stones on a path to a career in music . Others have embarked on different careers , but the joy of singing in Cantores lives with them . That joy was rekindled as many past members came to celebrate the 50 years in New Hall on November 5 th . We saluted Tony Ayres ( Co Ro , 69-09 )’ s inspirational idea , and sang together .
