We hope they will all be very happy here .
Pupil achievements Nico Cordonier-Gehring ( Coll , 22- ) was invited by UNESCO to give a speech as part of United Nations Day . Despite having only learnt the language for a couple of years , he prepared a speech in Spanish for pupils in the Dominican Republic and Carolina del Norte , which they clearly much enjoyed .
Nye Bailey ( Coll , 22- ) has won a place in the trombone section of The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain .
Sam Shi ( Coll , 20- ), having scored a unique 100 % in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge despite being a year younger than the other entrants , won the Danckwerts Prize , awarded in honour of Peter Danckwerts ( C , 30-34 ), the only FRS scientist to be awarded the George Cross .
John Paul Cheng ( E , 19- ) came top in the R . A . Butler Politics prize , with an essay entitled ‘ Are political promises always a sign of political weakness ?’ which discusses , among other promises , Cameron ’ s ‘ Pyrrhic gamble ’ on the EU membership referendum .
QEII feted the return of the French play : a fabulously stylish and fluent production of Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme , performed in the original , but with the most skilful surtitles I have ever seen . It turned out that they were the product of the MFL department ’ s translation club , and thus the exclusive work of pupils . Félicitations !
Rui-Lin Wang ( A , 18-23 ) represented the UK at this year ’ s International Biology Olympiad . There were three other Wykehamists in the top 16 , meaning that a quarter of the finalists came from Winchester .
For the second year running , William Thomson ( Coll , 18-23 ) was in the top 8 competitors in Round 2 of the Linguistics Olympiad . The school also welcomed him back this term for a talk entitled ‘ Journey to the British Maths Olympiad ’, which was attended by scores of Collegemen who would dearly like to take that journey themselves , including Barack Jin ( Coll , 21- ) who was the only Wykehamist to score full marks in Round 1 of this year ’ s Senior Maths Challenge , despite being only MP .
Cricketer Seb Morgan , who is still in VIBk2 , has been picked for the U19 England team for their tour of India . Wilf La Fontaine Jackson ( B , 18-23 ), an habitue of these pages , won the Walter Lawrence trophy for the highest score of the season against the MCC – a pacy 183 * off 158 balls , including 7 sixes and 26 fours .
The greatest sporting triumph of the year , however , is undoubtedly in croquet , where Winchester are National Champions in both forms ( golf and association , for the uninitiated ) thanks to the skill and dedication of David Follows ( Co Ro , 04- ) and his crack team of two Collegemen , Taanvir Sood ( Coll , 19- ) and August Deeming ( Coll , 20- ), and Kennyite Alaric ( D , 18-23 ).

Benjamin Cunningham ( K , 07-12 ; Co Ro , 18- ) writes :
The beginning of the holiday after Common Time saw the Chapel Choir go on tour to Paris in which they sang for Mass in St Eustache , having hotfooted it from the train , and concerts in the basilica of St Sulpice and in St Peter ’ s in the village of Chantilly . The short Cloister Time means that events always come thick and fast in the music diary , and 2023 was no exception . Within the first couple of weeks we had Songfest , a Wind and Brass Day followed by a BBQ in the Warden ’ s garden , an organ masterclass given by Sarah Baldock ( Director of Music , 22- ) followed by a recital , chamber concerts and Tombling Pot ( for performance of J . S . Bach ’ s music ), which was won by Austin Lam ( G , 20- ).
