From the Director
When I returned to Win Coll just over two years ago I joined an institution within an institution . At its head was Lorna Stoddart , the Director of Development . In the 14 years since Lorna arrived at Win Coll she has built a fundraising team that is the envy of schools ( and even universities ) across the land ; she has established and nurtured relationships between the College and its supporters around the world ; she has shown the College that fundraising is an important and central function to the school . On 31 st August this year Lorna retired and although we won ’ t let her go entirely ( Lorna will be retained as a consultant ), the search is on for her replacement . Indeed the recruitment process might outstrip the printing of the Trusty Servant !
Lorna ’ s network stretches far and wide ( as you receive this issue , Lorna is in Hong Kong , New Zealand or Australia ) and even before she started her role at Winchester she knew many in our community . Lorna was first approached by an OW working for an American recruitment firm ( needless to say she already knew him ) and after considerable persuasion she left the National Trust for Scotland and arrived at Win Coll in September 2008 . From the start and right up until the outbreak of COVID , Lorna commuted weekly from her home in the Scottish Highlands . Management meetings adapted to suit her timetable and the Win Coll Soc team , already familiar with remote working , were uniquely prepared when the pandemic struck . Lorna ’ s successes are too many to list , but here goes : since 2008 , the team has raised £ 76 million in donations , with a further £ 13 million pledged . In 2009 she introduced the school ’ s first Annual Report written for its own community , which transformed into The Wykeham Journal in 2014 , ( the ninth edition will be published in spring 2023 ). Lorna worked closely with both the Hong Kong Friends and the American Friends of Winchester College , and she has raised £ 14 million towards the new sports centre .
All of this has been achieved with quiet modesty – proffered praise is always deflected by ‘ it ’ s a team effort ’ and strong leadership , both within the school and at the head of the Win Coll Soc Team .
David Fellowes was among those who recruited Lorna . He was initially overwhelmed by her energy and reports ‘ that he nearly flipped within two hours on her first morning , but they quickly ‘ kissed and made up ’ … and the rest is , thankfully , blissful history !’ The school is extraordinarily lucky that David chose Lorna from the list of candidates 14 years ago . We wish her health , happiness and a long retirement .
