Laurence Henry McCurrich ( A , 53-58 ); died 21.7.2022 . Brother of JMMcC . John Mills Prize , Sailing Club 1958 ; Exhibitioner Southampton University , Civil Eng 1959-64 , BSc 1962 , commodore of Wessex Sailing Club 1962 ; MSc 1965 , CEng , MICE . He worked as a civil engineer : Taylor Woodrow Construction , Design & Research Department , Southall 1964- 74 , when he moved to Fosroc International , a division of Foseco Group , Birmingham , as technical director responsible for construction chemical products ; member Concrete Society Council 1978 ; chairman Concrete Society Materials Group 1985 ; Technology Director , Fosroc / Expandite division of Burmah Castrol 1991 . He retired in 1999 . Chairman , Rushock Parish Council 2004 ; churchwarden 2010 . A keen sailor , who participated in the Fastnet and Round the Island Races . He was also a car enthusiast , owning a steam traction engine and a collection of vintage tractors . He was particularly proud of his herd of rare breed sheep . He married Diana Passmore in 1965 , who died in 2021 , and he is survived by their 2 daughters and a son .
John Plowden Carrington ( Coll , 54-59 ); died 30.7.2022 . Hawkins ’ Prize 1959 . Scholarship Clare Coll . Cambridge , 2 ( 2 ) Eng . Pt . 1 and Hist . Pt . Additionally after1990 he was granted membership of Trinity Hall , Cambridge , in recognition of professional services rendered . He worked for Economist Intelligence Unit , Turkey 1962 ; Sheffield Morning Telegraph 1965 ; The Times 1967-70 , deputy business editor . In 1970 , he founded the botique investment management company John Carrington & Co . Ltd ., subsequently Carrington Pembroke Ltd . In 1996 the business was sold to ABN Amro Bank . Retired 1998 . His past nonexecutive directorships included
Artemis Fund Managers , JOS Holdings plc , Windsor Racecourse Ltd 1990-2000 and the British Bloodstock Agency . A keen racehorse owner and breeder , he was the creator of TrainerTrend , an innovative horseracing analysis product . His other interests included travel , languages , bridge , music and computer programming , as well as fly-fishing on the Test . An ebullient character who loved fine food and wine and was an eccentric dresser and an ardent pipe and cigar man . He married Jeanne Flood in 1990 , who survives him . William Rodney Stewart Smith ( Coll , 55-60 ); died 21.9.2022 . Sen Cap Prae 1960 , Moore Stevens Prize . Scholar Trinity Hall Cambridge , Paterson Scholarship , 1 Law , BA 1963 , LLB 1964 , George Long Prize for Roman Law . He was called to the Bar ( Middle Temple ) in 1964 ; New Square Chambers 1965 and was in practice for 57 years until a few weeks before his death . Recorder 1994-2004 ; Deputy Commissary of the Court of Faculties 2001 ; Bar representative member of the Land Registration Rule Committee 2003 ; General Commissioner of Taxes 1991-2007 ; Master of the Bench of the Middle Temple 1998 ; Reader of the Middle Temple 2011 . He was enormously generous with his time , served twice as Head of Chambers , and had a lasting impact on the development of Chambers , supporting the careers of many present and past members and staff . ‘ He was a kind and humble man . We will all miss him greatly ’. A keen theatre and concertgoer , he was also devoted to cricket , a member of the MCC and described by a colleague as a ‘ walking Wisden ’.
John Haddon Frowd Holman Sutcliffe ( C , 57-61 ); died 1.9.2022 . Mackenzie Prize , Drew Pot for Art
1961 ; St . John ’ s College Cambridge , 3 Arch . and Fine Arts 1965 , MA . He became an art historian and freelance artist-cum-glass-engraver 1965-8 . Exhibitions at Agnews 1966 , Heffer Gallery Cambridge and King ’ s Lynn Festival 1967 . National Trust Historic Buildings Representative 1968-73 and an interior designer and painter after 1973 , in particular at Nostell Priory , Blickling Hall , Wimpole Hall and Attingham Park . ‘ A master of domestic colour , he became a champion of marbling and graining and worked as a muralist and decorative painter across the world , using an approach that was both scholarly and craftsman like .’ Elegant and artistic , he was a longstanding member of the Chelsea Arts Club . Publications : Decorating Magic 1992 , Traditional Decorating 2002 and The Colours of Rome 2013 . He married ( 1 ) Henrietta Day in 1967 ( marriage dissolved 1980 ) and ( 2 ) Gabrielle Carter in 1980 , who survives him together with a son and daughter from the first marriage and 2 sons from the second . Hereward ( Herry ) Michael Patrick Lawford ( G , 59-64 ) died 8.9.2022 . Cross-country 1963-4 ( Capt .). Southampton University 1964-7 , 2 ( 2 ) Law , LL . B . He joined Thos . R . Miller & Son in 1967 and then managed mutual insurance associations for shipowners , airlines , the Bar , solicitors etc . He soon started to travel frequently to talk to clients , correspondents and lawyers - initially to Yugoslavia and India and then to the Middle East ( Saudi , Iraq ) and in time to Japan and China .
