Music : Benjamin Cunningham ( K , 07-12 ; Co Ro , 18- ) writes : Short Half 2021 saw a return to largely normal proceedings for the Music Department with its usual busy schedule of Chamber Concerts , orchestral and ensemble concerts , and the Cathedral Glee Club concert with Winchester Music Club . In November , directed by Howard Ionascu , Director of Chapel Music , Glee Club performed Haydn ’ s masterpiece , The Creation , the sensational soloists including Benjamin Hulett ( A , 90-95 ).
The School Concert included Elgar ’ s Cello Concerto , performed by Paul Lim ( E , 2017-22 ), conducted by Oliver Tarney ( Co Ro , 11- ). The traditional Mince Pies concerts , sung by Cantores Episocpi in College Hall , also resumed , the event proving so popular that David Hurley ( E , 76-80 ; Co Ro ) had to run into town one afternoon to source more mince pies !
The main musical event of Common Time was Glee Club ’ s performance of Oliver Tarney ’ s St Mark Passion with a libretto by Lucia Quinault ( Co Ro , 99- ), conducted by Benjamin Cunningham ( K , 07-12 ; Co Ro18 ). This was a major and brilliant undertaking , both musically and logistically , involving Glee Club , Chapel Choir , the professional semichorus of SANSARA ( run by Tom Herring ( I , 07-12 )), a large orchestra , and no fewer than eight soloists , all crammed onto the stage of New Hall .
Almost all school ensembles performed in a variety of concerts in Cloister Time , as well as an afternoon of singing , jazz , and rock music on the stage at Wykeham Day . Leon Küssner ( F , 17-22 ) performed Schumann ’ s Cello Concerto in May , an event delayed through injury from the academic year before . The year was rounded off with the School Concert which included Symphony Orchestra , playing Wagner and Elgar , Wind Orchestra , Sinfonia , and Chamber Orchestra who performed Mozart ’ s Sinfonia Concertante with Brandon Chan ( C , 17-22 ) playing the violin and Richmond Yeung ( B , 17-22 ) playing the viola , both doing so superbly .
And a last-minute update : in front of a packed New Hall , Freddie ’ s won Bobber Pot , singing America , by Razorlight , Hopper ’ s won the Julian Smith Cup with Vaughan Williams ’ setting of The Turtle Dove , and Trant ’ s won Schuster Pot , with an accomplished in-house arrangement of From Now On ( Pasek and Paul ) by James Porter ( H , 19- ).
