No . 132 The Trusty Servant
completed the course much faster than the organisers expected – except for Thalia , a classic gaff-rigged yacht , which retired due to the strength of the wind . So , in the event , we all got back to the Royal Yacht Squadron Haven in Cowes at approximately the same time .
The Old Carthusians were very appreciative of the Old Wykehamists taking part , and there was discussion of how other joint sailing events might be organised in the future . In any case , the memory of Mallory was duly celebrated on the water .
OW Football It has been an eventful year for the OW 1 st XI . The 2020 / 21 league season was declared null and void in April , with no fixtures possible in 2021 . Fortunately , the Arthur Dunn Cup was able to resume to a conclusion in April . Following a penalty-shootout victory at Old Cholmeleians in the round of 16 , dreams of a first final appearance since 2013 were sadly extinguished with a 5-2 quarterfinal defeat at the hands of eventual runners-up Old Alleynians .
However , the 2021 / 22 season has started brightly : 11 points have been amassed from the first six games and we lie second in the table , despite not having quite hit top gear yet due to an unfortunate run of injuries . The highlight so far saw James Essex ( I , 06-11 ) score a remarkable six goals in a single game against the Old Harrovians for the second season in a row . There has also been a welcome injection of youth in the form of recent leavers Fred Falk , Percy Winter ( both F , 16-21 ), Caspar Byers and Tom Swart ( both I , 16-20 ). A last- 16 cup game against Kings College Wimbledon awaits us in December , with a tilt at Arthur Dunn glory an unnervingly realistic ambition this year .
The annual game between the club and the School Soccer XI will henceforth be known as Maclure Pot , in memory of the late Patrick Maclure , whose support for both
School and OW football will be sorely missed . The inaugural fixture will take place on Friday 19 th November at Club des Sports in London and a brand-new trophy awaits the winners . If anyone would like to find out more about this , please get in touch via OldWykehamistFC @ gmail . com .
Editor ’ s Note : The postponed Thanksgiving service for Patrick Maclure will take place on the day of XVs . Please see Win Coll Soc News for details of registering to attend .
Croquet Aston Wade ( F , 15-20 ) has won the British Open Golf Croquet Championship , making him the British Champion in one of the two main croquet tournament disciplines . To put that in context , there were two former world croquet champions playing in the tournament , who between them had won the British Open Golf Croquet title every year for the last 20 years .
Sussex County CC played host to the GC Open . The field was three short of the normal 32 but there were no fewer than eight aged under 30 with Aston Wade and Euan Burridge still in their teens . The players were divided into four all-play-all blocks with the top four qualifying for the knock-out stage . 18 year old Aston Wade played his first GC event in August 2020 and stole the show in Block D with six impressive wins with straight hitting , good medium-range hooping and sensible tactics .
OW Footballers
Life became interesting in the quarterfinals . Aston Wade is a very wellmannered young man but Rachel Gee might be forgiven for wondering , as she was despatched 7-5 , 7-0 . John-Paul Moberly and Euan Burridge traded high-speed clearances but the England captain always had the edge and won 7-5 , 7-3 .
