Andy French ( Physics , 11- ) has written A Mezze of Mathematical Methods ( volume 1 of Science by Simulation ). It is a recipe book of mathematical models that can be enlivened by the transmutation of equations into computer code . The examples chosen are an eclectic mix of systems and stories rooted in common experience , rather than those normally associated with constrained courses on Physics , Chemistry or Biology taught in isolation and susceptible to going out of date . Rather than a ‘ what ’ of Science , this book is aimed at the ‘ how ’. This mathematically rigorous book is designed for readers to follow arguments step-by-step with stand-alone chapters which can be read independently . It will provide a tangible and accessible guide to interconnected mathematical ideas and computing methods that underpin science . World Scientific ; ISBN : 978- 1800611214 .
Belén Lopez ( Spanish , since 2018 ) has published Los Verbos en Español . LINS ; ISBN : 978-1919637075 .
The Headmaster reviews : Dr Alex Latter , Head of English , has had the honour of an article published by OUP in its literary journal , Cambridge Quarterly . The distinction is the greater given the subject matter – the notoriously recondite poet and academic , JH Prynne , and – still more – his correspondence about his work with his translators . Some knowledge of French is helpful to the reader , but the English Dictionary may also need to be at hand if one is not to exhibit a faultivity by failing to spot imbrications in the substrate . What results is a fascinating series of analyses , not only regarding the formation of text , but also the establishment and authentication of acceptable translation via legitimate understanding . In contrast to the famous dictum of Robert Frost , far from being what is lost , poetry seems in this context to be what is found in translation . For those who believe with JH Prynne that ‘ nearly too much / is , well , nowhere near enough ’, the article offers fascinating new horizons ; whilst for the erudite and energetic Dr Latter , this foray into horizons beyond Winchester is much to Winchester ’ s gain .

An ancient Greek vase , missing for almost 60 years , has been returned to the school after being entered for sale at an auction house in Sussex . The small lekythos ( oil flask ) was made in Athens in the early 5th century BC and is painted with an image of the god Zeus seated on a throne . It forms part of a collection of around 100 Greek vases originally acquired for the school museum in the late 19th century . In the 1960s , about fifteen vases were stolen from the school and sold to an antique dealer . They were then dispersed , with seven being auctioned at Christie ’ s in 1965 . Through the painstaking detective work of John Falconer , a former Classics teacher at Winchester , three of the missing vases were located and returned to the school in 2001 , 2002 and 2012 . One of these had travelled as far as the Columbia Museum of Art , North Carolina ; the others were found in Texas and Amsterdam . The College was alerted to the reappearance of the latest vase by Jasper Gaunt , a Classical archaeologist and grandson of Walter Oakeshott ( HM , 46-54 ). Through the kind cooperation of the auction house and the vendor , the missing lekythos has now been returned and may be viewed in the Treasury , 2-4pm daily , free , or online along with the rest of the Treasury ’ s collections at www . winchestercollection . co . uk .
