He worked for TW Ward Ltd , then United Steel Cos Ltd / British Steel Corporation 1955-81 . He ended his career at the European Commission , Brussels 1982- 7 , following which he was a part-time business consultant . He married Angela Killick in 1983 .
Philip Beckford Clark ( F , 41-45 ); died 18.3.2024 . Father of RHC . Trinity College Cambridge 1945 , Senior Scholar , 1 Nat Sci 1948 ; CU Sailing 1946-8 . University Scholar to Middlesex Hospital ; MB , BChir 1951 , MA 1952 . Lt RAMC 1953 , Capt , Korea . FRCS 1956 , MD 1962 , MChir 1963 . Surgeon , General Infirmary and St James ’ s Hospital , Leeds 1964-93 . His interests included glassengraving , playing the accordion , skiing , horticulture and sailing : he achieved a high level of expertise in all these areas and was a Royal Yachting Association tutor . He had a deep Christian faith and was a generous donor to many charities . What made him special was the devotion he showed to caring for his wife over a number of years when she was ill and infirm . He married Anne Hiscock in 1955 and is survived by 2 sons , a daughter having predeceased .
David Anstruther Henderson ( K , 41-45 ); died 24.10.2023 . VI . Queen ’ s Own Cameron Highlanders 1946 ; RMA Sandhurst 1947 ; 2 Lt RA 1948 ; served in Hong Kong and Korea . He resigned in 1953 and emigrated to Canada . He served in the Canadian Army 1954-74 , retiring with rank of Major and then returned to UK 1984 . Throughout his retirement , he dedicated himself to various community endeavors ranging from town administrator to bed-and-breakfast host , Border Collie search and rescue dog trainer , duplicate bridge club organizer , and Scottish Munro hill walking guide . He kept active with his many landscaping and gardening projects , weekly cryptic crosswords , bridge , and daily walks with his beloved Border Collies . He returned to Canada in 2012 . He married ( 1 ) Elizabeth Diane Gardner and ( 2 ) Anna Sweeney in 1976 , who survives him , together with 3 daughters from his first marriage .
Sir Patrick Hamilton Moberly ( Coll , 42-46 ); died 13.1.2024 . Son of GHM , father of AJM and JPM , brother of MGM , 4th generation of Wykehamists , father to son . 2Lt Devons 1946-8 , Eritrea . Scholar Trinity College Oxford 1948 , 2 Hist , BA 1951 . HM Diplomatic Service 1951-88 in London , Baghdad , Prague , Dakar , Canadian National Defence College and Tel Aviv during the Arab-Israeli Yom Kippur War in 1973 . Assistant Under Secretary of State 1976-81 , perhaps the most interesting position in the whole of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office at that time ; Ambassador to Israel 1981- 84 , during a particularly chilly phase of relations with Menachem Begin ; Ambassador to S Africa 1984-87 , during which time he was closely involved in British efforts to bring about an end to Apartheid . Like Israel , the South African government responded acidly when it felt it was being told what to do by other countries . CMG 1977 , KCMG 1986 . In retirement , he enjoyed being part of a Wimbledon bridge circle and loved opera . He married Mary Penfold in 1955 , who died in 2019 , and is survived by 2 sons and a daughter . Alan Douglas Tasker ( K , 42-47 ); died 7.2.2024 . Downing College Cambridge 1947 , Architecture and History 1948-50 , becoming heavily involved in the university automobile club . He subsequently raced at Goodwood , Silverstone , Brands Hatch and Castle Coombe , competing against Britain ’ s top drivers , including Sir Stirling Moss . Director of family firm McArthur & Co Ltd , steel stockholders , Bristol 1951-71 . JP 1976 ; director Mendip Finance Co 1965 ; director BCWA Ltd 1980-99 . General Commissioner of Income Tax 1978- 2004 . Master of the Society of Merchant Venturers 1990 ; President of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce ; Treasurer of the Bristol Conservative Association ; Councillor for Clifton 1987-95 and Honorary Alderman . He devoted much of his life to Bristol , working tirelessly for a variety of charities and organisations helping them to raise millions for youth groups , schools and the care of the elderly . Trustee for the National Eye Research Centre ; the Court of Bristol University and the Bristol Cathedral Trust . Vice President the Young Bristol charity and Chairman of Clifton Lawn Tennis Club and the Clifton Club , where he became one of the longest serving members . He married Lindy Thompson who survives him , together with a daughter , a stepson and stepdaughter .
John David Vincent Phipps ( G , 43-48 ); died 21.1.2024 . Son of JVP , father of EWRP , NDP and JWP . Bronze Medal , Gymna 1948 . National Service RA 1948-50 , Egypt . He rowed for London Rowing Club , Thames Cup 1951 . Fellow by examination , Chartered Insurance Institute . He joined National Employers ’ Mutual General Insurance Society 1950 and worked in Zambia , Nairobi , Kuala Lumpur and London . He then moved to Johannesburg 1960- 63 and Paris 1963-77 before being appointed company secretary at Head Office 1976-1990 . He was Chairman , Governors of Oakfield Secondary School , Swindon 1989-97 and in retirement honed his skills in woodwork and bookbinding , as well as exploring the canals of England . He subsequently moved to Sallanches in the Alps with a wonderful view of Mont Blanc and where he enjoyed many mountain walks and good food . He married Aliette Harrison in 1955 , who survives him together with 4 sons .
