William David Mansfield Lutyens ( A , 39-44 ; Co Ro , 52-58 ); died 30.11.2023 . Head of House ; VIII ( Pres ) 1943-44 , VI , Soccer XI . Soloist in Grieg Piano Concerto . Scholar Magdalene College Cambridge 1944 , Nat Sci , 1 Pt 1 , 3 Pt 2 , 1947 . 2 Lt , RAEC 1948 , Capt . Magdalene College 1949 , 2 Hist 1950 , MA 1952 . Assistant Master King Edward ’ s School , Birmingham 1950-52 . College Tutor 1954-57 . Commonwealth Fund Fellowship , Harvard 1957- 9 ; member , Physical Science Study Committee ( PSSC ) joint project with MIT . First Science Editor of Penguin Books ; anchor on ITN News , writing and hosting several science programmes on both ITV and the BBC , 1959-61 . His coverage of the space race in the 1960s exhibited his passion for both the technological and social aspects of space exploration . He returned to US in 1961 . President , Ealing Films ; Home Vision , adapting movies for teaching literature in schools ; and Opera World , video-recording live opera on TV . He continued to explore complex topics well into his retirement , becoming particularly fascinated with the workings of the human brain . He was a skilled sailor and took up windsurfing . His freshwater activities included canoeing and skating on the Concord River . He is survived by his 3 rd wife Lucretia and by a son and 2 daughters .
Colin Frederick Upton ( Co Ro , 86-09 ); died 11.12.2023 . University College , London , Astrophysics , BSc . Before coming to the school , he taught at the American University in Beirut , only leaving when the danger level became critical , around the time of Terry Waite ’ s kidnapping . He retained an affection for the Middle East and , not surprisingly , was a quiet expert on the culture and politics of that part of the world . He was also quiet about his considerable ability in Mathematics . Cook ’ s House Tutor for 21 years , he will probably be remembered chiefly for two things : his sense of humour and his spectacular success with Win Coll cross country running , with his teams becoming the best in the country and maintaining this position for several years . He was a great supporter of music in the school , giving enthusiastic encouragement to generations of performers . His album From Innocence to Age transformed into Far above a Midnight Sky , which directly involved a number of OW musicians in Vista Musicale and which was made in the famous Abbey Road studios , was massively important to him . After leaving Win Coll he lived in Upham and a few years later moved to Devon . He made many friends who , like his pupils at Win Coll , loved him for his warmth , generosity and intelligence . ‘ He really knew how to do retirement , basically by not retiring .’
Carl Helmut Amberg ( E , 39-40 ); died 29.1.2024 . Raised in Aachen , Germany , he arrived in Canada as a refugee via Win Coll at age 16 . Fellow , Chemicals Institute of Canada ; Amherst College USA 1953-5 ; NRC Ottawa 1955-64 ; Professor , Carleton University Ottawa 1970-71 , Chairman 1970-71 & 1976-9 and Dean of Graduate Studies 1979-80 . Visiting Professor Eindhoven University of Technology 1971-72 ; the Catalysis Award for Canada 1982 . He had a long association with Ottawa ’ s Family Service Centre and supported many refugee and immigrant causes . A talented amateur cellist from a young age , he regularly played chamber music with friends . He married ( 1 ) Anne Kraus in 1950 , who died in 1984 , and ( 2 ) Evelyn Wu in 1984 , who survives him together with 2 daughters and a son from the first marriage , together with a stepson .
Martin Robert Monier-Williams ( I , 39-43 ); died 8.12.2023 . Son of GWM-W . VIII 1943 . RNVR 1943 , Home Waters ; invalided 1944 . University College Oxford 1944-47 , 3 Jur , BA 1948 , MA 1953 . Captain , Kingston Rowing Club 1950-51 . He qualified as a Solicitor 1951 ; Slaughter & May 1950-53 ; partner , Lawrence Graham , 1954-87 , senior partner 1979-87 . Governor , St John ’ s School , Leatherhead 1961-79 , Chairman 1969- 79 . His great passion was rowing and he only gave up going to the Henley Royal Regatta every year when he became too infirm . He loved painting in watercolour , fishing and music , also singing for the Bach Choir and Guildford Philharmonic . He was a loyal friend to many and a very active resident of the village of Chiddingfold where he lived for 65 years , serving on the parish council and acting pro bono for many village disputes . He married Noël Western in 1956 , who died in 2018 , and is survived by 2 daughters .
