OWs Remembered in South Africa Footnotes to the Wykeham Patrons ’ Trip to South Africa .
393 Old Wykehamists fought in the South African War [ Second Anglo Boer War , 1899-02 ], of whom 33 were to be killed or die of wounds or illness . Of the 360 who survived , a further 50 were to die in subsequent wars . Two of those survivors became the catalyst for previous Patrons ’ Trips – Lt Col . Charles Doughty- Wylie , who won a posthumous VC at Gallipoli in 1915 ( Coll , 82-87 ) inspired the 2011 trip to Turkey ; and Field Marshal Earl Wavell ( Coll , 96-00 ) gave his name to the Indian trip in 2015 .
To enlighten the travellers to South Africa , David Fellowes ( I , 63-67 ) prepared two accompanying booklets , which provided some background
OW history as well as a South African Roll of Honour . If anyone would like a copy of either booklet , please contact the Win Coll Soc office .
Lt GHB Coulson ( A , 92-95 ) rescuing Corporal Cranmer under fire , 18 th May 1901 , an act which led to the loss of his life and the posthumous award of the VC .
Some Events to Look Forward To
New York Dinner A dinner will be held in New York on Friday 20 th October 2023 . Intended as an opportunity for the new Headmaster , Elizabeth Stone , to meet the American Friends of Winchester College , it will be open to anyone from the Wykehamical community who happens to be in New York at the time . War Cloister Centenary Events As advertised in November , there will be a major recognition of the War Cloister Centenary , which falls due in 2024 . This will take three forms : firstly , a series of lectures , short trips and other events , which are all connected to War Cloister . The programme is still expanding , but events showing the War Cloister logo can be found in Dates for your Diary and highlighted by this logo :
Secondly , the memorial itself will undergo a significant refurbishment over the next 18 months to preserve the fabric of the engraved tablets , flintwork and decorative carvings .
And thirdly , a centenary event will be held in Winchester to embrace the school and all those who have a
connection with War Cloister . It is likely to be held on Remembrance Sunday , 10th November 2024 .
Cantores Episcopi Reunion Were you a member of Cantores Episcopi ? 2023 marks its 50 th anniversary . To celebrate the occasion a ‘ Come and Sing ’ event with a concert and refreshments is planned to take place in Winchester on Saturday 4 th November . Invitations will be issued towards the end of July .
Monte Cassino battlefield tour , 2024 James Webster ( Co Ro , 92- ) writes : In September 2024 ( 23rd-26th ), Michael Wallis ( Co Ro , 86-20 ) and I are planning to take a battlefield tour to study the controversial battles to capture the famous Benedictine monastery of Monte Cassino , a dominating position on the road north to Rome .
