No . 135 The Trusty Servant
VIBk2 pupils to be involved in drama in their first term . Freddie ’ s took first place .
Common Time finished with the school play , Macbeth , with a combined cast and crew of fifty pupils . This exciting production was full of originality and unexpected touches , including gender-blind multi-roling , a single lighting plot , and tableaux and split-staging . Audiences picked out as particular strengths the eclecticism of design , the discipline in crowd scenes , and the clear vocal delivery , particularly of Francesca Wyse ( H , 22- ) and Michael Nevin ( G , 19- ) who switched roles ( thrice !) midplay as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth .
Inter-school sport : Mark Burley ( Co Ro , 20- ) writes : Soccer XI had their best season for close to 20 years , including reaching the last 16 of the ISFA Cup . We defeated Charterhouse for the first time in ten years and they eventually lost in the final of the ISFA Cup . The U14 soccer team also had an exciting term , and reached the last 32 of the English Schools FA Cup , which is open to all schools . We had the first girls ’ football match , too , against Charterhouse .
The Fives team took multiple trophies in singles and doubles at the West of England Tournament in January , and in the National Championships in March won two more ( the U16 doubles and U18 singles ), and were represented in four of the six finals . Badminton has also had an excellent season , winning 19 out of 21 matches .
The Senior VIII finished 5 th / 21 at last week ’ s Schools Head of the River and the J15 VIII finished 3 rd / 13 . Our first girls ’ quad competed at the Avon Head rowing race .
We have been using Winchester Sports & Leisure Centre for squash and swimming this past twelve months and this has provided an opportunity for a new group of young squash players to make significant improvements in their performances . The swimming team performed admirably at the recent Bath Cup , achieving a top 10 time and making the final of the medley relay .
The golf team has qualified for the ISGA Finals , taking place in late April .
Winchester College Football XVs Benjamin Cunningham , ( K , 07-12 ; Co Ro ( 18- ), OTH coach writes : Going up to books on the morning of XVs is one of the more exciting walks to class that a Wykehamist undertakes , and this year was no exception . Flint Court was festooned in red , brown and white , further building the atmosphere for the game . On the dot of 14:30 , the Chapel bells rang out and the two teams walked from War Cloister , behind Pearl Pot ( the trophy to be won ), and onto the Canvas . OTH won the toss , somewhat surprisingly won the first hot , and took the first point of the game .
Commoners quickly replied with a goal ( 3 points ). However , with sustained and excellent kicking from the OTH Kicks of Caspar Hall ( B , 18- ), Freddie van Every ( A , 18- ) and Will Whitehead ( A , 18- ) it quickly became a one-sided affair . The final score was 65-37 to OTH . It is tempting to give all the glory to the Kicks , but this impressive result would not have happened without all the superb ropes-play and chasing from the OTH Ups and Hotwatches .
Pearl Pot and glory , then , returned to OTH for this year , but Commoners will already have their eyes on getting it back next time !
Xs In Xs College narrowly failed to overpower Commoners , losing 44-48 , and were defeated 78-31 by OTH .
VIs OTH also dominated VIs , beating Commoners 62-28 and a feisty College team 58-39 ; the result of Long Game , after a dramatic lastminute goal secured victory for OTH , suggests that their reign may continue .
Palmer results After two frozen weeks at the beginning of Common Time , during which Palmer resembled a tastefullyappurtenanced ice-hockey rink , the House competitions got under way , with their familiar combination of intense competition , good humour , and an inclusive attitude to team composition . Jun IXs was won by Beloe ’ s , Mid Xs by Toye ’ s , and Sen IXs ( played after XVs , and therefore including many canvas men ) was won by Hopper ’ s , after a close-fought campaign against rivals Furley ’ s .
The final highlight of the season is the VIs Festival , invented by Nick MacKinnon ( CoRo , 86-20 , Ho Do F , 96-09 ) in 2011 , and packed with thrilling inter-house games . Toye ’ s won comfortably in the end : unsurprisingly , as four of their players were members of the OTH VI .
CoRo achievements
William Guast ’ s ( Co Ro , 19- ) research has been published by CUP in Articulating Resistance Under the Roman Empire , a collection of essays which explore the many strategies by which elite Greeks and Romans resisted the cultural and political hegemony of the Roman Empire in ways that avoided direct confrontation or simple warfare . His classes , who have long enjoyed his pyrotechnic discussions of rhetoric , will not be surprised to learn that Dr Guast ’ s chapter focuses on resistance in Greek literature of
