No . 133 The Trusty Servant
George Saumarez Smith ( B , 86-91 ) is celebrated for the elegance of his work as one of Britain ’ s foremost classical architects . As a student at Edinburgh University , he belonged to the last year group to be taught the skill of measured drawing as part of the core syllabus and it would become a passion for him . Sketchbooks : Collected Measured Drawings and Architectural Sketches presents a selection of the drawings that he has made in the last twenty-five years in a series of sketchbooks each of which is named after one of the Roman emperors .
George ’ s drawings display a supreme mastery that goes beyond technique and assumes the status of art . They constitute a series of concentrated observations on buildings from different parts of the world which unlock the secrets of their design and give insight into the minds of their creators . Simply by applying pencil to paper , aided only by a tape measure and a ruler to measure the building in front of him , George pursues an adventure in the world of built form whose aesthetic beauty will both amaze and delight .
Afficionados of Winchester will appreciate the sketches of local architectural details and Wykehamists will appreciate the endpapers in the book : both panoramas of Florence , which were drawn in 1991 when George was one of the recipients of the Grahame Drew Travel Scholarship .

The Economics of The Stock Market by Andrew Smithers ( D , 51-55 ) was published by Oxford University Press on 10 th March .
It presents a radical new model for the economy which follows from using the data we have on long-term returns on shortterm debt , longdated bonds and equities . Consensus models , whether neoclassical or DSGE , ignore these data and assume that these different forms of financial capital fluctuate together . This assumption is shown to be invalid .
By using the data , the new stock market model shows that there are at least two different equilibria
which need to be preserved to avoid major recessions . By assuming that there is one such equilibrium current policy , which naturally follows from current consensus theory , leads to periodic crises .

Felix Warnock ( B , 65-68 ) has recently completed his memoir Perfection is Not the Word for It .
Orchestral life in Britain is thriving and anarchic , in turns chaotic , hilarious and brutal . Perfection Is Not the Word for It is a personal , and mostly affectionate , account of life amongst the extraordinary characters who lead their over-stressed lives in this unusual world , surrounded by music but driven by everyday anxieties , and always defying the best efforts of administrators , bureaucrats and conductors to tame the unruly beast which is a professional orchestra .
