Win Coll Soc News

Friends of Winchester College. Important Changes Winchester College hugely values the relationships it holds with its friends( note the small F) around the Globe and we are aware that these relationships evolve. So it is with the Friends of Winchester College, who have been in existence in various forms for over 30 years. Originally founded when James Sabben-Clare was Headmaster, the Friends filled an important space that for some was to do with fundraising while for others it was to do with sport. For many, the Friends provided opportunities to visit the College and enjoy the company of like-minded people.
Each of those aspects has evolved: fundraising is now a significant activity in its own right, co-ordinated by Winchester College Society; the opening of the new Sports Centre has provided public access to its wonderful facilities; and the Friends lecture programme has evolved into the school’ s lecture programme, open to all.
What’ s changing? After careful consideration, the College will no longer charge a subscription to be a Friend of Winchester College. The change will come into effect immediately and we have already cancelled future Direct Debit and Credit Card renewals with effect from 1 June 2025.
If you pay your subscription by Standing Order, we cannot cancel that for you, so please ask your bank to stop that. We will write to you shortly in any case to remind you.
We are extremely grateful to all those who have paid Friends’ subscriptions over the years. Your combined subscriptions have enhanced the College
Collections, for instance contributing to the purchase of a 15 th Century Arabic cosmological text and the rebuilding of the fountain in Moberly Court. If you would like to continue supporting the College with a regular gift, this can easily be done via the Win Coll Soc website or by contacting the office. Details are on the back page.
Apart from that, there will be no change to what you can enjoy by visiting the College. You will be able to book to attend events within the School Lecture Programme and the Music Programme. Win Coll Soc will advertise these termly as we are given details. Links to the lecture booking system and to the Music Diary will be published regularly in the Trust e-Servant.
Life after Winchester One of the most lasting gifts that the College can offer its pupils is a network of students, professionals, musicians, artists, servicemen and others representing all the walks of life. Please be part of that Wykehamical network by adding your career details

Crown & Manor News Life in Hackney is simply not like life in Winchester.
Today, Crown & Manor is still needed by the community of Hackney, probably more than ever before. Our longstanding relationship with Winchester College has always been central to our donor-base. Now, with heightened need, we are looking for an OW who might like to join our fundraising team to focus specifically on this community.
Numerous factors contribute to the disaffection of youth. Crown & Manor’ s role is to see that each of our members avoids this and is given the chance to reach his potential. As with many charities, the last few years have presented a steady and unrelenting succession of challenges, all to be met alongside a growing need for the club’ s services. We navigate very choppy waters. Over half our income comes from donations and we owe much gratitude to Winchester College itself and the extended OW community.
Fundraising has had to broaden its scope, widen its outlook and raise its ceiling. We have a committed team with varied experience behind them. If you feel you might be the person we are looking for to fundraise in this capacity, please contact cbrycesmith @ crownandmanor. org. uk
