him as he travelled this long closed land from the Baltic to the Bering Sea. It is also a deeply human tale, of a charismatic figure who rose so high, mingled with the mighty of East and West, and then lost it all. 224 pages; Pen & Sword Military; ISBN 978-1399059381
The Enduring Hold of Islam in Turkey, The revival of the religious orders and the rise of Erdoğan. This is the first account in English of how Islamic religious orders dating back to Ottoman times have risen to dominate and define the future of Turkey, Europe’ s awkward neighbour and the major power in the Eastern Mediterranean. Peter Frankopan wrote in The Financial Times:‘ Excellent... Tonge is an astute commentator who navigates the thorns of Turkish politics, identity and spiritual beliefs sympathetically and authoritatively... Tonge has done a wonderful job in reminding us that it is not individuals that matter in history, but the institutions that provide the pillars on which power is built.’ 384 pages; Hurst Publishing; ISBN 978-1911723837
Adam Weymouth’ s( C, 97-02) new book, Lone Wolf tells the story of his epic walk across the Alps in the footsteps of a wolf, throwing unique light on Europe’ s mountainous hinterlands at a moment of political and environmental change.
In 2011, a young wolf named Slavc set out from Slovenia. Tracked by GPS, he
travelled a thousand miles through the Alps, arriving four months later on the Lessinian plateau, north of Verona. There had been no wolves in northern Italy for a century, but here he crossed paths with a female wolf on a walkabout of her own. A decade later and there are more than a hundred wolves back in the area, the result of their remarkable meeting.
In Lone Wolf, Adam walks Slavc’ s path, examining the changes facing these wild corners of Europe. Here, the call to rewild meets the urge to preserve culture; nationalism and globalisation pull apart; climate change is radically changing lives; and migrants, too, are on the move.
Lone Wolf will be Book of the Week on Radio 4, commencing 2 nd June. 384 pages; Hutchinson Heinemann; ISBN 978-1529151947
