Christopher Nicholas Copeman( D, 50-55); died 20.8.2025. Princes 1954-5( capt). RN 1955-67, retired as Lt. Executive, British United Provident Association from 1967, retired 1995. He had a wonderful retirement, played golf, had shares in a number of horses and enjoyed going racing and betting on a variety of sports. A lot of time was also spent at his home in La Gomera in the Canary Islands. He married Caroline Wilson in 1991, who survives him.
Peter Worsey Newman( B, 52-57); died 20.8.2025. Brother of TJBN and DJWN. Helped to start pottery and printing at Win Coll. Jesus College Cambridge 1959-62, 2( i) Hist and Pol Thought. A publisher for 40 years, he took over Newman Books Ltd from his father, producing thick directories for buyers in the Retail and later the Property world, along with monthly magazines for the same clientele; the company was eventually sold to the group who owned Glasses Guide. His favourite hobby was good wine: he built his own large cellar and belonged to the Reform Club, where for many years he was an influential member of the Wine Committee. He also learnt to fly Tiger Moths and loved big motor bikes. He married Irene Herzberg in 1967, who died in 2018, and is survived by their son and daughter.

Research into acute hypoxia at high altitudes 1967-77, Peruvian Andes, Yukon and Himalayas, several first ascents. In charge of American relief effort after Peru earthquake, May 1970; deputy editor New England Journal of Medicine and Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard University Medical School 1977-81; deputy editor Journal of the American Medical Association 1983; Professor of Medicine, University of California 1988. FRCP( London) 1995-6; President, Council of Science Editors 1996-8; President, World Association of Medical Editors 2005; member of US Government Committee on Research Integrity 2004-5; Master of American College of Physicians 2009; Science Freedom & Responsibility Award of American Association for the Advancement of Science. He published over 220 articles. Member The Alpine Club, The American Alpine Club, Tobogganing Club of St Moritz. He married( 1) Silvia Nussio in 1958, marriage dissolved 1984, and( 2) Deborah Peltzman in 1992, who survives him, together with a daughter and son from the first marriage. Richard Willoughby Gott( G, 52-57); died 2.11.2025. Nephew of Sir Walter Oakeshott( CoRo, 31-38, Headmaster, 46-54). Exhibitioner Corpus Christi College Oxford 1958-61, 2 Mod Hist, MA. Research fellow, Chatham House 1963-4; on staff of The Guardian. Independent candidate in Hull North by-election 1966. Research professor, University of Chile 1966-9. In 1967, he identified Che Guevara’ s body after the failure of Guevara’ s Bolivian campaign: he was the only person in the country who had previously met Guevara. Third World correspondent, New Statesman 1971-2; features editor then literary editor of The Guardian. He resigned in 1994 after it was alleged in The Spectator that he had been an“ agent of influence” for the KGB: the source of the allegation was KGB defector Oleg Gordievsky. Awarded Order of the Miranda by Venezuelan government 2002. Co-author of The Appeasers( with
Martin Gilbert) 1963 and author of Guerilla Movements in Latin America 1970, Land Without Evil: Utopian Journeys Across the South American Watershed 1993, Cuba: a New History 2005, Hugo Chavez and the Bolivarian Revolution 2005, Britain’ s Empire: Resistance, Repression, Revolt 2012. He will be remembered as an avowed Marxist and one of the most informed commentators on Latin American affairs. Freelance solo counter tenor; founder and director Amaryllis Consort 1983; concert and operatic appearances in many countries, at principal music festivals and on TV and radio; many recordings for Decca, EMI, CBS, DGG, Philips etc. Professor of Singing, Royal Academy of Music 1988-2003; Hon RAM 1990; visiting music staff at Win Coll. Freelance researcher in art history; co-author of John Brett: A Pre-Raphaelite in Cornwall 2006 and John Brett: Pre-Raphaelite Landscape Painter 2010. He married( 1) Brigid Evelyn Cecilia Barstow in 1973, marriage dissolved 1994, and( 2) Cécile Bourasset in 1998, who survives him together with a son and daughter from the first marriage.
