PGA NEWS
Congratulations To Tele and his PGA Junior League and a 2nd Place finish at the PGA Junior League National Championships in Frisco TX . The team won the National Championship in 2021 .
We asked Tele to share with us some of he ’ s keys to success and his ability to build a great junior program .
Building a Program
• How many participants / teams do you have in your junior league ?
Currently our Jr League is limited to 84 kids in the 13 and under league . We are planning to expand and include a 17 and under league in 2024 . Anticipate having 30 kids to start .
• Do have multiple days or one day a week ?
For our PGA Jr League : we have practice once a week starting mid-May and running through the first week of Aug . Every participant chooses ( 6 ) practices to attend during the season . Each practice has a cap of 40 players . We also scatter ( 9 ) 9hole match times throughout the season . Each player picks ( 6 ) of them to compete in .
• How many weeks does your spring junior league sessions last ?
The season begins in mid-May . Ends after 1st week of Aug . Our Jr League season runs a total of roughly 10-12 weeks .
• Is Instruction part of junior league , if not what instruction do you offer ?
Yes , each practice that we host roughly 3- 4 skill stations where kids are instructed . Each week we try to do something different . We usually have ( 4 ) instructors that facilitate the practices .
• What other junior programs do you offer ?
Our course also has 4-day summer camps that we offer . We have ( 1 ) camp in June , 1 in July and ( 1 ) in Aug . Each of these camps is capped at 50 kids .
• How did / do you promote and build your program ?
Our Jr League began with 8 kids about 9 years ago when the PGA started PGA jr league . It ’ s continued to grow each year . I think we have a good system in place . We keep it fun for the players and families . Players love the team aspect that this format offers . We have been successful at developing kids from the very beginning . These kids found success at the regional and national levels , which certainly helped generate more interest in our league . Kids and parents who have loved the experience share it with everyone else they play with at individual events . The league grows by word of mouth . A lot of our kids also start in the summer camps and progress into the league . This has also been a good feeder system as well .
