John T . Byrne Jr ., Muir ’ 76 , died after a long battle with Parkinson ’ s Disease . He was 73 . He was a sailor , lifeguard , surfer , diver , marine biologist , and fisherman with a youthful and vibrant spirit . He is survived by his siblings and many nephews and nieces .
John Conlisk died October 22 , 2021 . He was 82 . Conlisk joined the UC San Diego Department of Economics in 1969 and retired as a Distinguished Professor in 1999 . He mentored students , trained PhD students , and was known to play departmental pick-up soccer with his colleagues .
Thomas R . Elliott , Revelle ‘ 84 , MS ‘ 89 , died November 7 , 2021 . He was 61 .

Mehran Goulian died January 7 , 2022 . He was 92 . He was a member of the Division of Hematology in the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine . He retired in 1995 . He is survived by three children and three grandchildren .
Robert J . Grano , EdD ’ 13 , died from brain cancer on November 4 , 2021 . He was 64 . His career in education spanned 38 years , starting and ending with the San Diego Unified School District . A lifelong learner , he earned his doctorate from UC San Diego when he was 56 . He is survived by his wife , children and extended family .
Adrianus J . Kalmijn died December 7 , 2021 from complications of acute myeloid leukemia . He was 88 . A biologist and physicist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego , he pioneered the study of electromagnetics in shark sensory functions .
Paul Libby , professor emeritus , died November 2 , 2021 . He was 100 . An international expert in turbulence and combustion , Libby was recruited as one of 10 founding faculty members of the Department of Applied Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering ( AMES ) at UC San Diego in 1964 . He is survived by his son , daughter and grandchildren .
Yolanda López , MFA ’ 79 , died September 3 , 2021 from liver cancer . She was 78 . An artist and activist , López created one of the most influential artworks in Chicano / a / x history , “ Portrait of the Artist as the Virgin of Guadalupe .” The piece reimagines the Virgin of Guadalupe in the artist ’ s own image — a young , strong brown woman in running shoes with a wide grin , a challenge to the traditional colonial and patriarchal origin story .
Daniel McKeown , Warren ‘ 86 , died December 9 , 2021 . He was 92 .
Brad E . Normandin , MAS ‘ 06 , died December 29 , 2021 . He was 65 . He is survived by his husband , Danny , and extended family .
Nolan E . Penn , professor emeritus , died December 13 , 2021 . He was 93 . In 1970 , he joined UC San Diego School of Medicine as a professor of psychiatry . He was also the founding chair of the Urban and Rural Studies Program at UC San Diego ’ s Third College . He was later appointed associate chancellor , serving as an advisor to the chancellor for all matters related to affirmative action .
Jeannene Przyblyski , Warren ‘ 81 , died January 21 , 2022 . She was 62 . The former CalArts provost and School of Art faculty member was an accomplished artist , historian , educator and lecturer . She is survived by her husband and daughter .
Peter Robbins , Muir ‘ 80 , died January 18 , 2022 . He was 65 . Robbins was an actor who provided the original voice of Charlie Brown in Peanuts cartoons of the 1960s including “ A Charlie Brown Christmas ” and “ It ’ s the Great Pumpkin , Charlie Brown .”
