2 Trimester Rotunda Library Newsletter Electronic Journals Move to E-Only in 2014 E vidence shows that high quality information is beneficial. It has a positive effect on service utilisation, health costs, patient health behaviour. Information is an intervention that impacts health and well being and contributes to quality, clinical effectivenes, safety and patient experience. Informaiton must adhere to quality standards. (Patient Information Forum/UK 2013) The Library and Information Service at the Rotunda provides information in a variety of formats: through its user enquiry service, reference facilities, lending and networked electronic access to all resoures. Its catalogue, Heritage, provides access to current and historical titles, which are classified and catalogued for reader use. Approximately 79 print titles adorn its shelves, providing access to a collection of journal titles, supporting Obs and Gyn, Paediatrics, Anaesthesia, Midwifery and Laboratory Medicine. Traditionally users availed of a departmental circulation policy, to ensure immediate access to new print issues. Over a process of time, this print model was further developed to include print and online access for certain titles. This was an economic model of moving to electronic access at an agreed cost to the print production. It broadened access and increased usage levels. The cost of binding yearly journals in buckram remained a constant partnership. Platforms to access electronic resources became more sophisticated and information providers were presented with more choices regarding the platform from which users accessed these valuable resources. Platforms such as Swetswise were forward runners in the race to provide efficient and trustworthy access. Online databases developed the scope of full text attachements for their licensed users, making it efficient to search and access fulltext. Athens authentication methods allowed the user to register with their service providers for remote use of resources. The virtual library became a reality for users, working effectively from their own homes. The models of access discussed became separate entities. Information providers could no longer support print journal access and its subsequent binding requirements and costs with effective electronic access. Libraries as a result have been commiting to the provision of an electronic model of access. The Rotunda undertook a costing reivew of all its resources via the Library Users Committee at its May 2013. Models of delivery were reviewed for each journal title and electronic database and book held by the library. Out of date models were identified for deletion in 2014.
