RIVERWALK PROJECT UNDER WAY IN FLORIDA Earlier this year, Ayres helped develop designs for a proposed new public library and city hall catalytic development adjacent to the ecological education center. The joint facility was intended to build off the programming and aesthetic outcomes of the nature center and fix an urban gap in the community. To date, the team has prepared drawings as well as funding and public relations content. The project went to referendum this year. Although it was voted down, organizers still hope to develop the campus and promote the educational programming and events offered there. 28│ TRENDS Work is ramping up on a unique trail system project in the City of Crystal River, Florida. The project’s first phase – completed earlier this year – involved design and permitting of a 10-foot-wide landscaped pedestrian trail through the City’s King’s Bay Riverwalk. The trail connects the project’s waterward segment, adjacent parks, and other amenities. Ayres’ engineers are now concentrating efforts on finalizing plans on the waterward portion of the project, including bid plans and the more-complicated-than-usual environmental permit application. Sixteen agencies are involved because the project is in a manatee sanctuary, is in an area home to numerous endangered and threatened species, is located along a designated Outstanding Florida Water, and contains high-magnitude springs. The team is also coordinating with 11 property owners to gain easement rights through the properties and redesigning four commercial docks/marinas that need to be relocated (and permitted) for the project. Project manager Jan Ash estimates the waterward phase to be completed in two years; construction is restricted during manatee season.
