Ayres wins four Engineering Excellence Awards
Ayres was honored with four 2020 Engineering Excellence Awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Wisconsin . The projects winning awards are in all quadrants of the state – Marinette , Eau Claire , Waunakee , and Milwaukee . Winning a Best of State Award was the Grand Avenue Pedestrian Bridge Rehabilitation project . In 2018 the City of Eau Claire partnered with Ayres to extend this pedestrian bridge ’ s useful service life and update its look to complement the vibrant downtown area it serves . In addition , the partnership sought to realize the City ’ s vision of the Grand Avenue Bridge as a unique public gathering space and a downtown destination .
Ayres relied on innovative , non-standard analysis to determine the feasibility of widening the bridge deck as the City desired . Based on its evaluation of strength and vibration performance , Ayres ultimately expanded the new deck to 12 feet wide as the City had hoped , designing it to rest safely on the bridge ’ s over- 100-year-old limestone piers and its 40-year-old steel girders .
Reuse of these elements saved the City a large sum on the $ 1.8 million project and provided the community with a legacy example of how old and new can be blended . With a wider deck , decorative railings , overhead / underdeck lighting , and six www . AyresAssociates . com 41
