Knowing the dos and don’ts of jewelry maintenance can change a piece of jewelry from short term adornment to a piece that lasts through generations. What’s the best way to keep your jewelry in tip top shape? Let’s take a look at some basic maintenance techniques that will extend the life of your investment.

Jewelry To Do List

When taking on and off your jewelry, there are a few tips that you want to always practice. When dressing, make sure to apply any cosmetics, lotions, perfume and hairspray before putting on your jewelry. Also, when you are done with your evening and are undressing, take a second to wipe each piece with a clean soft cloth to remove any perspiration and oils. When you are not wearing your jewelry store it in a fabric-lined box separately or individually wrapped in tissue to prevent scratches.

Jewelry Not To Do List

Some of the do not list may seem obvious but when running through your hectic day it may be easy to forget or overlook these tips. Make sure to never wear jewelry when doing physical work such as gardening, housekeeping, or exercise. Never expose jewelry to household cleaning products. You also want to never expose jewelry to chlorine swimming pools or hot tubs.

Proper Cleaning

When cleaning a piece of jewelry it is very important to follow the instructions on the label or box of the piece of jewelry. Make sure that when you are cleaning to stay away from areas that could cause you to lose the piece. For example, cleaning jewelry in the sink presents the risk of dropping it down the drain. Use a soft brush when cleaning as opposed to hard or sharp objects. Also, clean your jewelry often. Remember that lotions, soaps and skin oils can cause jewelry to look old. If the jewelry is seriously soiled, it is best to seek a professional to get it cleaned.

Pearls and Gemstones

When cleaning diamond jewelry, use a soft brush dipped in warm water and mild detergent then rinse under running water. Store pearl jewelry in a soft bag and never expose it to chemicals or solvents. Gemstones must also be kept away from chemicals and solvents and also ultrasonics if you are unfamiliar with your gemstone’s specific cleaning requirements.
