Our total combined CO2 emissions were 11,117 metric tons (MT) in FY14, with 2,726 resulting from operation of our fleet vehicles and 561 MT from natural gas combustion at our office locations. The remaining 7,830 MT of our emissions are associated with electricity consumption. Where available, actual utility data was used to calculate GHG emissions associated with our offices. For the remaining locations we used a calculation methodology similar to what was used in our energy footprint, with additional factors applied to apportion our total energy usage into electricity and heating purposes. Standard emission factors published by the EPA were then used to calculate GHG emissions resulting from these sources. Emissions from our fleet vehicles are based on gallons of fuel consumed during FY14. Although we do not currently track Scope 3 GHG emissions from sources such as personal vehicle travel, airfare, rental vehicles, or other similar sources, we have implemented measures to promote reductions in Scope 3 emissions. We encourage employees to use public transportation where possible and effective, and have offered reimbursement for public transportation fees in select locations. We look to minimize overall employee commutes when selecting new office locations, and when feasible, site our offices near public transportation and efficient community routes. We also allow employees to have flexible work arrangements where appropriate, such as working from home and telecommuting.   REDUCING OUR FOOTPRINT TRC fosters and promotes an atmosphere where employees are conscious of the environmental impact of their daily decisions. Below are some initiatives that employees can take to support TRC’s overall goals: • Reducing material consumption by promoting electronic invoicing, • • • • • • • • recordkeeping, and project deliverables Partnership for print r cartridge, toner, and small electronics recycling. e Partnership for providing filtered water coolers Recycling paper, cardboard, batteries, and fluorescent bulbs (see Recycling section Purchasing environmentally preferable or EnergyStar certified products Replacing existing lighting with more efficient systems (see Energy section) Promoting low energy hibernation mode for idle electronic equipment Telecommuting or virtual meetings Installation of water-efficient toilets The way we manage our office space and daily activities have direct correlations to our environmental and energy footprint. TRC has hired a national architect to focus on efficient layout of offices to optimize work space. We expect that more 56 | 2014 Sustainability Report
