The pup tugged on her sweater sleeve with its mouth and took her to the far end of the library . The corner was lit with warm fairy lights hung from the roof and comfy bean bag chairs littered the carpeted floor . Persephone read the titles of the books and noticed that they were all by known philosophers , she ran her fingers from one book to the next and chose one at random .
Questions that Matter : An Invitation to Philosophy by Ed . L . Miller and Jon Jensen .
She flipped to a random page and read Page 354 .“ But what , then , lies in this mysterious zone between pure chance and pure necessity ? What might the indeterminist or free-willist mean by ‘ uncaused ’ choices or ‘ free ’ will ? Some indeterminists or freewillists would withdraw at this point with a quiet , ‘ I really don ’ t know . But there must be some such . For it is certainly a bigger problem to reject morality than not to have a clear and coherent idea of free will . Take your choice . But do you really have one ?”
Persephone began to converse with herself : So , the choices I make are a result of what I am predetermined to do , meaning I don ’ t have free will to do what I want ? I mean , yes , we are built from our past and those experiences influence our decisions but that wouldn ’ t necessarily mean we have no free will . Sometimes we act completely outside of what we tend to do .
She flipped to another page and read Page 342 . Subjectivism denies any absolute or objective moral values that are common to all , and affirms that the individual is the source and criterion or moral judgments . Cultural relativism states that each culture has its own set of goods , and what is good in one culture may not be good in another .
She conversed with herself again : Another theory , then , is that morality is relative . Relative to the situation , the person ' s personal reasoning , and even cultural upbringing . So , If I were in a situation in which I am basically pushed to make a decision that might be perceived as immoral , it ' s not truly immoral due to circumstance ? Or is it more complicated than being pushed to a decision ? To connect to the last paragraph , can a situation be justified due to someone ' s upbringing even though it was immoral by general standards ? I don ’ t think it can most of the time . It can definitely explain behavior but not necessarily justify it .
Snap . Snap . SNAP . The annoyingly loud sound brought Persephone back to reality . She squinted her eyes to see an elderly woman standing by the farthest bookshelf .
