The hill is artificial and would ’ ve been constructed around one thousand years ago with a timber construction atop . During the fourteenth century this would ’ ve been replaced with a stone construction that still remains , albeit in a serious state of disrepair . Duffus was once considered one of the strongest such constructions in the whole of Scotland , however , has been used in well over three centuries . Now it is surrounded by farmland and although crumbling Duffus Castle reminds of a bygone era where such fortifications were needed .
The landscape in this part of Scotland seemed to be in eternal conflict as too many to count castles and fortifications were constructed
