kilometres wide in some sections , however the mountains might have some say in that , for here they can be as high as six thousand metres .
In various ways Khorog was the terminus of true adventure . The Pamir Highway proper , heads directly east while the road we would continue in a southerly direction to indeed the narrowest part of the Wakhan Corridor . Unused , besides for locals and the adventurous traveller , this road , is considered the much greater challenge as it is often deteriorated to the point of impassable in selected circumstances .
The landscapes provided a backdrop that complimented the riding . Dusty tracks wound their way around precarious cliffsides where the remnants of ancient fortresses clung to history and below in their shadow local shepherds drove sheep and goats to who knows where , always with a smile and a “ welcome to Tajikistan ” in broken English .
The Pamiri people are some of the friendliest you will meet , forever curious as to your native land and explaining the local history of theirs , often wonderful interactions that lead to an invite to tea , or a roadside lunch .
You ’ d be forgiven for thinking that this part of the world is devoid
