important as we had another big day ahead , winding through and down the Caucasus mountains . We stopped at Sakinule Cave , rode down past Shaori Reservoir , snaking our way to lunch at the markets in Kutaisi , before heading to the old abandoned Tskaltubo railway station .
Tskaltubo Railway Station in Georgia became abandoned after the collapse of the town ’ s spa industry , which happened as a result of the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s . Originally servicing the towns twenty-two spa resorts , there was once daily trains arriving packed with holiday makers and workers from Moscow .
The Sanatorium Metallurgist one of the prestigious spa resorts , despite being dilapidated , looked abandoned but still housed refugees , who were told they would be staying one year , now some 30 years later , they still live there in the worst living conditions , no water , little power and no heat . It ’ s a sombre experience visiting these locations , and I can ’ t help but wonder the suffering these people must have endured as a result of conflict .
