of movement . Centred around a large cathedral , many thoroughfares run in parallel , forming a grid that is interconnected by smaller streets and lanes , even smaller walkways provide a shortcut between many dwellings , a wonderful opportunity to interact with the local people , all friendly and wanting to know about the Australian and why he was here .
These interactions quickly became
the norm as I slipped into the daily routine of life in a colonial town , engaging and relaxed , how I could easily settle in such a place . Morning routine , before the heat of the day , afforded a walk of town as children made their way to school , a double take and a quick “¡ hola !” with a wave . A chance to examine the architecture and simplistic design that has stood the test of time and the encroachment of modernity .
The colonial buildings stood proud offering some indication to the occupants and their personalities , coloured balconies , ornate religious plaques , open doorways that invited a peak into a courtyard or corner store .
