from near Dargo to well into New South Wales and even the Australian Capital Territory . Pockets of temperate rainforests are contained deep within the valleys while subalpine and alpine forests are found in the higher reaches . Snowgum and Alpine Ash are plentiful providing a canopy that is deeply diverse . Riding through these tracts of forest , often on old mountain cattle trails , is a unique experience that can often challenge even the most confident of riders .
“ I sampled the high-country soil ,” laughed Walsh wiping a patch of mud from his shoulder , a regular occurrence for many of the riders when they weren ’ t draining water from riding boots .
Three days of riding gave everyone a sample of what the region has to offer , which included more water than most had every seen with well over forty river crossings that varied from narrow shallow creeks to one hundred metre wide , deep fast flowing alpine rivers .
