lashed by powerful ocean waves , which took us all the way to the Cape of Good Hope . This is a special place , traditionally known as the southernmost point on the African continent and whose name reminded us of stories and legends of intrepid explorers .
Vasco de Gama and Bartholomew Diaz passed through here , and we were contemplating that same endless horizon with a thrill , thinking that from here on there was only the vastness of the sea , nothing else , and far away , Antarctica , the most extreme and partly unexplored continent on Earth . We were excited because we really felt at the bottom of the world .
