TRAVERSE 179
rich wildlife during exciting safaris . All this by following South Africa ' s two most famous roads , the Garden Route along the coast and the Sixty- Two , which goes into the wilderness of the Little Karoo , traversing scenic and adventurous mountain passes . Fantastic routes all to be experienced by riding a motorcycle , the true jewel in the crown of a journey that remained in the heart .
Our journey started in Cape Town , which showed us the unique outline of Table Mountain , the " flat mountain ," whose summit , reachable only by cable car , a thousand metres higher , offers an impressive view of the entire city and the bay . Instead , by motorcycle we reached Signal Hill , another beautiful viewpoint overlooking Table Bay and then headed to Chapman ' s Peak Drive considered one of the most scenic coastal roads in the country .
To get there we went through Imizamo Yethu , a township inherited from the apartheid period but today still inhabited by thousands of people . It is the first of several other townships we would encounter throughout the journey , a sign that despite two decades of democracy , the division between whites and " coloured " people remains and true integration is still far off .
Taking Chapman ' s Peak Drive , high on the cliffs , it was all one spectacular view after another , especially as we reached Hout Bay , a deep bay surrounded by craggy mountains . Further on steep slopes alternated with huge , lonely beaches , where intrepid surfers braved the ocean ' s big waves . Chapman ' s Peak Drive is only the prelude to other beautiful roads that for dozens and dozens of kilometres will get us along the coast until Cape Agulhas .
Such as those that pass through the wild Cape Peninsula among fields of fynbos , the typical shrub of this area that provide a hiding place for the numerous baboons , and cliffs
