European settlers moved into the area in the 1880s , a promise of gold drew many people to the area despite the rugged terrain . A township formed , with some of the remnants forming what is now the Wilderness Village , the only surviving mining township of its kind anywhere in Tasmania .
Riding in from the north leaves the adventurous with two main options , the Norfolk Road that follows the west coast or the Corinna Road that starts from the east , originally as the Waratah Road . Both are an interesting ride showcasing what is regarded as some of the world ’ s most pristine wilderness .
The ride north starts when the Corinna Road leaves the Heemskirk Road yet still offers a stunning ride through old growth forests . This
old relics of the past provide a level of accommodation , the " old pub " is a great place to start
