The Amazon stores an estimated 150-200 billion tons of carbon in its forests and soils , making it a critical tool in fighting the climate crisis . Human activities such as logging , the practice of cutting down and extracting trees for commercial purposes , pose a significant threat to the vital Amazonian ecosystem . Protecting and conserving the Amazon is essential for preserving global biodiversity , mitigating climate change , and supporting the wellbeing of local communities .
