I thanked them both immensely for the gesture , told them it was incredible what had happened and that I was thrilled . The beautiful young cashier was looking at me as if she were my mum and said , “ It ’ s because what you are doing is AMAZING ... 8,500 miles on a motorbike ? It ’ s incredible !”
Continuing by the ocean along 1A , lined up with restaurants serving Maine ' s specialty , lobster . I was struck by the " profile " of the people .
On this side of the U . S . they ’ re all " pretty ", all " uppers ", and show signs of being fine and educated people . High quality of life , lots of high-end convertible cars , you can " smell " the money . The beaches were crowded with holidaymakers enjoying the sun as I came across tanned bodies on bicycles exercising their legs . At the far end of the bay , I was surprised to see countless watercolor artists with easels , painting the same scene : the lighthouse .
I was taken by the beauty of the young woman who tended the beauty parlor where , in a bourgeois act , I stopped to have my hair washed . Those hands that caressed my scalp , I would never forget them ...
That evening I stayed in a small hotel in Ellsworth , Maine , a few kilometres from the Canadian border .
“ Where are you going ?” the receptionist asked me as I checked in . I told her I was going to Mountain Desert Island first , and then , I would cross the border into Canada to camp at Cape Breton .
“ Oh ! I love Canada ! It ' s so clean !” she replied excitedly . GM
