Greeted by eucalypts and pine trees , it seemed strange that these giants grew amongst the sand dunes of the area . A strange land , considered desert , easy to see why . The lands taking in Wyperfeld were once part of a shallow sea that covered a vast area of South Australia and Victoria . Twenty-five million years of sediments built and as the sea waters retreated , around 25,000 years ago , the sands remained and formed vast dunes .
Until European settlement lakes would regularly fill in 20-year cycles providing a source of water for animal and plant life . Agricultural consumption has seen water supplies significantly reduce with the lakes not being filled since prior to 1975 , recent years has seen this diminish even more . The landscape and animal life have managed to adapt to changing conditions however , how long can environments continually adapt to the misuse by modern
