were limited to around 100 , yet Stuart and his team were adamant that the 2021 Flinders Classic would go ahead .
The Classic kicks off with a head count and meet and greet in front of the Angorichina Village . Riders are introduced to the leads with the knowledge that this region is an extremely remote and harsh landscape , recovery times can take many hours . Safety is paramount .
Without generating fear , riders are warned of the dangers and asked to think about what the consequences of reckless riding can be , it ’ s a four-day event and everyone is required to get home .
Riders are expected to be self-sufficient carrying everything they need to repair a bike , remain hydrated , and help a fallen rider . Lead riders all carry satellite phones and communications .
Adventure riders are a varied lot , and the Flinders Classic attracts the complete gamut . Sixteen-year-old girls , riding XT250s are joined by seventy-year-old men on DRs . Lead riders , Martin Winters , Con Giagtzis , and Richard Ramsey chat amongst their teams , explaining what to expect , the terrain , the weather , the conditions . Rides are loops of between 100 and 300 kilometres , starting and returning to the Angorichina Village .
