The bikes were brought into a modern world borrowing considerable design features from the four wheeled cousins , and when released in 1970 were considered some of the most desirable bikes around . Today , although old and almost vintage looking , with features that demonstrate their 50-year-old design the / 5 bikes are still desirable . In Keith Luke ’ s 1973 model we ’ ve come across an extremely desirable model that isn ’ t shy of demonstrating that BMW were onto a winning formula all those years ago .
Keith is just the third owner of this R60 / 5 , and it shows . It ’ s been cared for without moth balling , originally owned in South Africa before being shipped to Australia with its then owner . That owner had a collection of bikes and the R60 / 5 was the only one he kept , in fact he held on to it for 40 years . Owner number two had the bike for ten years , before Keith picked it up . He ’ d always wanted an ‘ old ’ and this fit the criteria perfectly , so much so he decided to take part in a ride across the Australian continent before Covid struck and made travel impossible .
