Throughout their entire history If there ’ s one motorcycle that epitomises the BMW range throughout their entire history , it ’ s the slash (/) 5 series . You see . It ’ s perhaps this bike that saved BMW Motorrad .
Previous incarnations of the BMW airhead bikes were a long way behind that of the Japanese , Italian and even British designs , power , and handling both suffered . BMW were keen to turn the company around financially and thus concentrated on passenger vehicles , a move that did ultimately save the business however , the motorcycle arm was struggling .
Good fortune saw BMW decide to stay with motorcycles and in 1964 were able to get Hans-Gunther von der Marwitz away from Porsche . What he did was revolutionise the design of BMW motorcycles . The flat airhead remained yet almost everything else was a new feature . The / 5 series was born in R50 , R60 , and R75 formats or 500cc , 600cc and 750cc .
