TRAVERSE 126
Motorcycle travellers planning on exploring Australia ’ s southern , island state will soon be able to take their bikes on the Spirit of Tasmania , free of charge .
Australia ’ s Federal Government announced it will temporarily increase the Bass Strait Passenger Vehicle Equalisation Scheme ( BSPVES ), meaning passengers on the ferry between Melbourne and Devonport will be able to bring their bikes at no extra charge .
From January 2021 , the Spirit of Tasmania will waive its usual vehicle fees for travellers who are making the journey any time between March1 and June 30 , 2021 . Vehicles are usually charged at between AU $ 99 and AU $ 149 per vehicle , meaning there will now only be the cost of travel for the person .
Although in operation since 1996 , the BSPVES has been extended to entice travellers to Tasmania since borders have reopened during the Covid-19 outbreak . Tasmania is a state that relies heavily on tourism , both domestic and international . The scheme accounts for all passengers vehicles although caravans will still need to pay some of the cost .
The scheme is being backed by the Australian Government to the extent of AU $ 6 million and Spirit of Tasmania warn that once it has been exhausted fares will revert to the original cost , they explained that travellers should get in quick to make a booking .
