just keen to get some miles under our belts. The first half a dozen river crossings as expected were no drama, then riding up over the last crest we hit the Walsh river. The depth indicator read just over 0.8 metres and we knew straight away this river wasn’t even walkable, let alone ridable. The river was flowing fast, with 30 metres of wet river mud either side. Even if we got through the river, it would be a mission to get up the bank on the other side. We had a plan B up our sleeve, so feeling a little defeated we quickly turned around and headed down another track towards Mt Surprise. Everything was going well, the trails fun and amazing scenery, then we were met with the Lynd river. The first half of the river we could walk to test for depth and was quite clear, but the second half got to well over a metre and was very murky, hiding perhaps a few crocodiles. TRAVERSE 83
