back to Tasmania,” Borys sheepishly explains in almost hushed tones. “The temperatures were excessively hot on my trip to Perth.” Jakub rolls his eyes in agreement, “this choice was an extremely stupid one because on our day riding from Wudinna to Stawell it was the most freezing and most miserable ride of our trip.” Unseasonably cold weather had hit Australia’s south- east corner during the middle of the summer, not a com- mon occurrence. An easy mistake to make? Both laugh as we discuss always taking all sorts of gear. We all laugh and put it down to a rookie mistake. Although near the end of the ride the experience didn’t diminish what had preceded it, in fact both see it as a pos- itive and continue to laugh about being able to share the experience. Borys takes from the experience that he has a son that is “persistent, focused, positive and trusting”. “I learnt that Jakub is a legend,” Borys looks fondly at his boy. There’s clearly a special bond between the two. Jakub realised it was a learning experience for him too, discovering the challenges that such a ride throw at you can make you a better person. “It showed me that breaking the seemingly impossible into little steps allows you to reach your goals,” there’s a maturity that is very seen in someone of Jakub’s age. “I learnt that I can do anything and can endure uncomfort- able situations. I also learnt that I should be prepared for unplanned events.” These are sentiments that Borys agrees with, “I learnt that when forced to, we can overcome situations that TRAVERSE 35
