FATHER TO SON
Y
ou can’t get much more of a greater distance on
the Australian continent than travelling by road
from Perth to Tasmania. Crossing the Nullarbor
Plain is enough to challenge many riders, just look
at the numerous misguided posts on social media about
the subject, yet for the father and son duo of Borys and
Jakub Szydloweski it was a challenge they were up for.
We caught up with the pair as they prepared to board the
Spirit of Tasmania for their final leg. A few beers, a lot of
laughs, and an insight of what it means to travel with your
son, with your father …
The pair have a joint love for the BMW R1200GS, and
have travelled together many times throughout their
home state of Tasmania, yet this was a first; riding across
the country, a first that challenged both and broadened
their appreciation for travel, motorcycles and each other.
“Riding with my dad allowed me to see an adventure
is comprised of highs and lows,” explained 14 year old
Jakub. The pair soon realised that adventure means
adapting to conditions and often plans mean very little.
“It was fantastic to show Jakub that plans change,”
agreed Borys. “Uncontrollable situations arise.
“It was fantastic to see Jakub persevere in times of
hardship. It demonstrated to Jakub that a trip without
misadventure is merely a trip, we had an adventure.”
As the pair rode from the Western Australian capital
of Perth, they reached the outskirts of Norseman for the
first night’s camp, they realised they were sharing a spe-
cial experience between father and son.
“Riding with Jakub was the best experience,” grins Bo-
