"I'm Basically Your Average Rider"
THE ARCTICE RIDER
limits, to set new goals. And he’s set himself another one.
The Dalton Highway.
At 666km in length, perhaps an ominous figure, the Dalton
is regarded as one of the world’s toughest roads. Stretching
from just north of Fairbanks in Alaska, USA to Deadhorse
near the Arctic Ocean. It’s remote, it’s mostly gravel, and it’s
cold … oh, there’s also trucks, lots of trucks. Between 150 and
300 drive the Dalton every day, as anyone who watches Ice
Road Truckers would know.
Gordon is taking on the Dalton as part of his grand plan to
ride every country that sits within the Arctic Circle, and al-
though raising money for his chosen charities, he doesn’t see
himself as anyone special.
“I'm basically just your average rider, trying to make a
small difference through biking”, Gordon shyly admits, “tak-
ing on some adventures in the process.”
“I'm probably never going to able to hit the road and do
TRAVERSE
a RTW trip for a year. But I think that's OK, to still be able to
go on 2-3-4 week adventures around the world but then also
be able to come home and enjoy walking your kids to school
and taking them to the park.”
Gordon might be on to something. Isn’t an adventure all
about challenging yourself? Discovering new things? Learn-
ing from your surroundings? Learning about yourself?
Gordon has learnt a lot and continues to do so, he’ll be
sharing his adventures with Traverse as they happen and we
look forward to them. In the meantime, if you want to follow,
