Riding For Health Riders now work with a number of government, private and non-government organisations to ensure that the best possible health care is being delivered through the most re- liable means. Although pharmaceutical and basic healthcare practioning is key to how Riders works, the organisation has now 'branched' into other vital areas of healthcare, including; refrigerated transport and ambulances, both four and three- wheeled, yes there's motorcycle and sidecar ambulances. The figures associated with Riders is astounding, and con- tinues to impress every year, they're so astounding that all are impossible to list however consider this: • • • • • The child immunisation rate in Gambia is now at 97%. No immunisation clinic is cancelled due to lack of transport. Prior to Riders, testing for HIV required a wait of over three months before the results were known, it's now just six days. Suspected cases of the Ebola virus in Liberia are tested as a priority sample, virtually eliminating the chance of another Ebola breakout. An average of 78% of all samples for testing now reach laboratories within 24 hours, prior to Riders the figure was greater than 75% took longer than 24 hours. Riders has a replication team ready to dispatch and setup operating teams anywhere in Africa with almost immediate affect, this is potentially something that could be deployed across the globe. TRAVERSE The shear scale of Riders is amazing and that's attribut- ed to the people who are Riders; the people of Africa. It's hard not to want to mention everyone who works with Riders, unfortunately it would take volumes. An example is Sarah Meco Layweh, the only female sample transporter in Liberia, in fact she is the head transporter in her region and has a team of men working with her. Sarah is keen to get other women working with her to make a difference, it's her love of the people and riding a motorcycle that keeps her going. "I enjoy doing this work, I can sometimes cover 290km from Sanniquellie to Zudru Clinic In Tappita district be- tween Grand Gedeh and Nimba County," she says. Sarah is an inspiration to not only Riders, but to all riders. If you'd like a greater understanding of the work that Riders does visit www.ridersintl.org 15
