Heading East, visitors can
enjoy the narrow streets
of the old Jewish quarter,
full of old houses, shops
and restaurants, which is
especially beautiful at the
end of the afternoon when
the last rays of the sun create
their magic. Through Calle
de Socorro, visitors can enjoy
the old Casa del Sol, now the
Segovia Museum, just at the
border of the city walls, and
also with incredible views
of the valley. On the same
road the Convento de Corpus
Christi (the old Synagogue),
and the Puerta de San
Andres are just two examples
of architectural relics from
different cultures sharing
the city.
A
five minute
stroll will take
visitors to
another amazing
construction,
the Catedral de Santa Maria,
which is the last gothic
cathedral to be built in Spain.
The original cathedral was
of Romanesque style and
situated opposite the Alcazar
but was destroyed in 1521,
giving way to the current one
on which the construction
began 1525. Expect to spend
a few hours inside due to
its huge architectural and
religious wealth: no less
than eighteen chapels ho ld
beautiful religious pieces
of art, but the building of
the cathedral itself is just
incredible and a pleasure for
the eyes.
Next to the cathedral is
the Plaza Mayor, the city’s
main square, surrounded by
beautiful buildings, and with
many bars and restaurants
which offer traditional
delicious Segovian food.
Perhaps the most popular
dish here is the cochinillo
asado (roasted piglet) a
delicacy that this town is
famous for, their cooking
technique make the piglet
so delicious and tender that
it can be cut with a plate
rather than a knife. One of
the most famous restaurants
is Jose Maria (Cronista Lecea
11), a couple of minutes
stroll from the square will
take you there. You can
enjoy a drink at the bar or
some of the best food at
the restaurant where wine
lovers can also enjoy Pago de
Carraovejas wine produced
at the owner’s winery.
Calle Juan Bravo will lead
visitors to Iglesia de San
Martin and the Royal
Prison, two more examples
of ancient architecture
which grace Segovia.
These architectural
masterpieces together with
other ancient works in
Segovia will bring you back
to thriving centuries with
endless stories about this
tranquil city.
