Cinco de Mayo has become a frontrunner in America ’ s holiday celebrations . There are countless parties , live bands , festivals – and of course , the iconic Margarita – that take center stage every year on the 5 th of May . But why ? Not that we need a valid excuse to celebrate with good drinks , but what exactly is the history behind the Margarita itself , and when did it infiltrate the long-celebrated holiday to become a central , if not the most vital staple ?
Many people have come forward to claim the title of inventor of this famous drink , but none of them have been able to secure their status . In fact , the most concrete piece of early Margarita evidence that we have is the world ’ s first frozen Margarita machine ever made , which is housed at the Smithsonian ’ s National Museum of American History . It was invented by Mariano Martinez in 1971 , but still , long after the Margarita had already appeared on every halfway decent restaurant menu .
