Developing closer ties with Saudi Arabia
Visiting medical students from Al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University
Now in its fifth year, ISTM runs a programme for visiting
students from the College of Medicine at Al Imam Mohammed Ibn Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Professor Andy Garner, the Dean of Health, recently visited Riyadh to sign an agreement to ensure both Universities' future commitment to the programme.
Fourteen students stayed for four weeks during the summer, accompanied by their tutor Dr Saad Mohammed Al
Suwayri, Assistant Professor in the College of Medicine.
They learned about the latest research carried out
at Keele and the University Hospitals of North Midlands,
as well as conducting their own individual lab-based projects. An academic programme developed by Dr Paul
Roach comprised a series of lectures, hands-on visits to
the KAVE and Anatomy Suite, plus tours of UHNM departments, which host a range of research projects involving patients.
There was an induction by Keele's International team,
held in the Old Library in Keele Hall, and on one evening
they enjoyed traditional English fish and chips at the
home of Mark Smith, ISTM's Research Manager. The
photograph shows the students there, with their supervisors and course organisers, Mark Smith (front row left),
Joseph Clarke, Dr Paul Roach, Sian Colley and Professor
Richard Luther, Head of Internationalisation (back row).
