~we can use our practice to remind us that we are all connected, within the color and support that a family can provide.~
We do, certainly, practice Hatha Yoga together. My kids and I attend Family Yoga classes, my husband and I practice together when he’s preparing for a race, and my children stand in as my students when I try out a new set of sequences to offer at
an upcoming class. Asana is a wildly important part of Yoga, and it’s so appealing to kids that I’ve never met a child that won’t try at least one or two poses, and after that, they are hooked. It’s a pleasure to watch. Lion Pose, my goodness, they can’t be stopped after they try Lion Pose.
You know what you feel after a great practice followed by an even better Savasana? Priceless peace. While the kiddos don’t need a full de-stress reprogramming (like we maybe, just sometimes need), they do feel better after moving around. Yoga can, for kids, shake loose any troubles they carry in their small bodies. So no discounting the fun and release that will happen when you and your children enjoy Asana practice together. But Family Yoga, the true joy of it, goes beyond Asana.
Asana is a piece of the Yoga pie (or triple-layer Yoga cake, to the kids). We can’t forget the infinitely valuable component of mindfulness. Mindfulness allows us to be more than what we are when we are performing our family roles.
