FROM THE SCOUT EXECUTIVE
Training = Positive Results
Since we began implementing the mandatory Youth Protection Training policy in 2010 , the number of major and minor incidents affecting youth safety have declined . In 2016 , there were no major youth protection incidents , even with nearly 900 adult leaders registered . This is an accomplishment achievable only through the diligence , cooperation , and enforcement of the fundamentals by our peers .
When we work together to correct each other , support each other , and put youth safety first we minimize risk . When the Council began mandatory basic training in 2013 , the goal was to further keep our youth safe through education , planning , and again , minimizing the risk of injury or death .
There are hazards in everything we do whether it is simply crossing the street or participating in a 50-mile canoe trip . Taking the BSA training seriously and encouraging our peers to take training not only minimizes the risk to adults and youth , but results in in a reduction in claims . The next step in improving our results is improving our retraining rate .
The Council encourages ANNUAL Youth Protection Training for all leaders to keep our leaders sharp and in compliance . No leader may reregister without current ( less than 2 years ) youth protection training . Early in the year we start with 100 % of our leaders trained , but as the months progress our percentage of trained leaders drops because people fall out of the 2-year compliance . We are asking every unit and member to be proactive in not letting their training lapse . The Council provides every unit with a training DVD annually and the my . scouting . org website as resources .
The Council Board — and the parents of our youth — Thank You for making youth safety a priority .
