Track and Field Power-Up | Page 4

Letter to the Editor

“Dear Editor,

In last month’s issue of your magazine, you wrote an article about high school sports. You had mentioned that you have some suggestions on how to improve on the experience for the athletes involved. Can you please take minute and comment on these improvements now?

Thank you,

Noah Fence”

Dear Noah,

Whether it is a team or individual sport, each athlete has their own set of goals they want to achieve, and coaches should recognize these and take them into account. In individual sports like track and field, an athlete usually has goals that include things like new personal bests or to place a certain rank at a competition. Whereas in team sports, the players usually have goals to support teammates and play strategically. All these factors need to be accounted for so the coaches can properly assess and address each individual by the intentions they have in their sport. Every athlete is on a different playing field, and they all compete and practice differently than one another, so coaches should not just treat the team as a whole. If a certain athlete does not care how well they compete, then the coaches should address their attitude accordingly, this way the rest of the team does not have to suffer because of the actions of a teammate.
