14. Probationary Period
All new employees below the level of Executive Management will serve a probationary period of three (3) months. At
the level of Executive Management, the probationary period may be up to six (6) months. If the employee performs sat-
isfactorily during this period, and a clear vacancy exists within the establishment, the employee may be recommended
for permanent employment. Any period served in a temporary capacity may be considered, in whole or in part, in the
determination of the probationary period. During the probationary period, the manager/supervisors should monitor and
coach new employees and keep them aware of their progress and performance on a regular basis.
The following conditions should apply:
(a)
It is the responsibility of the manager/supervisor to assess the performance of an employee on probation and the
employee must be formally advised of his/her status at least one (1) month prior to the expiration of the probationary
period. Assessment forms must be completed and returned to the Human Resource Management Division one (1) week
before the end of the probationary period.
(b)
On completion of the probationary period, an employee will be granted an extension to his/her probationary
period not exceeding three (3) months, or released from employment with the company, or confirmed, in writing, in the
employment.
(c)
No notice period or pay in lieu of notice is required if termination is done during the first three (3) months of em-
ployment. Thereafter a minimum of two (2) weeks’ notice or pay in lieu of is applicable. This notice period during the first
three (3) months of employment is also applicable in the case of Executive Managers who may be required to serve a
probationary period of six (6) months.
(d)
If the employee resigns during his/her required probationary period, he/she is not required to give the company
notice. The company may also terminate the employee’s services without notice during the probationary period.
